Design Symposium- Serendipity Magazine

What a great honor to be asked as an expert panelist for the Design Symposium held by the infamous Serendipity Magazine.   I sat next to the finest in the industry at the Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams store in Greenwich, Connecticut.

To be a part of the design community is a unique experience and beneficial.  I'm all about collaborating and sharing various aspects with colleagues, vendors, carpenters, etc.  Collaboration is a must in order to grow.  I thank Gardner Stevens the color specialist from Farrow & Ball, Priscilla Cronin the textile expert from Stark Carpets and interior designer Amy Aidinis Hirsch for sharing your expertise. I love listening about all aspects of this incredible field.

Dress up your walls!

There are many ways to make an impact on a space. One of the simplest ways is to install a wall covering. Whether choosing from bold geometrics or variety of textures, a wall covering has the ability to dramatically grab your attention or subtly welcome you into a space.

The initial thought of a wall covering can be intimidating for clients, or frankly, fearful of wallpapers of the past. With so many wonderful lines to choose from, these feelings easily subside and the end result is never disappointing!

We are always in search of materials to make our clients’ spaces unique. Here are some of our favorites:

Candice Olson's line from York...STUNNING!!! She has put together a well curated line with an array of incredible options. York carries many lines with various price points and a definite go to for our clients.

Another, less committal, option is a self-adhesive wall covering. These are great for getting your feet wet or for temporary spaces such as apartments. We used this concept for The Lexington Store in Greenwich, Connecticut.  Swag Wallcovering carries unique prints that are cost efficient, have a quick lead time and easy to apply. Not to mention their sales associates are incredibly helpful!

Thank you to Eleanor from Swag Paper for the extremely quick lead time for this stunning self adhesive wall covering. www.swagpaper.com

We dressed these walls in York Wallcovering
to add a soft touch of lilac to this Dining Room.

Candice Olson's masterpiece added the perfect
 touch to this powder room.

Candice Olson did it again. She created another stunning wall covering that complimented the furniture for this living room and made my clients very happy.

Small Spaces

Every interior design project has it's challenges regardless of the size of your home or business.  One of the most common questions we receive is "I have a small space and want it to feel bigger…can you help me?"  I want to share some tips to help you achieve this without having to hire a designer.

First and most important factor is you need to purchase furniture with clean lines and are to scale for the space you're designing.  Clients tend to want to add as much possible to the room since it's limited.  However in this case less is more.  In the picture below, we replaced traditional roll armed furniture with transitional clean line pieces. We started with two chairs and one sofa and ended with the same amount of furniture.  The only difference is the furniture fits the scale of the room and has cleaner lines that make the room more functional.

We also changed the paint color and window treatments to coordinate with the fabric on the sofa to give the room more appeal and a little punch of color.  This client was intimidated with pattern but after many conversations she was willing to take the chance with a decorative ottoman.  Pattern is always important. It gives the eye a focal point. Don't be afraid of it…embrace it.

Next incorporate glass and mirrors in the room.  Mirrors always give the illusion and manipulate the size of the space making it feel greater then it is.  Glass also helps because your allowed to see the full scale of the room.  For example..in the pictures below we decided to keep the mirrors and glass table.  The glass coffee table allows you to see the space and make the room feel greater in size. If a solid wood table was used you would see less of the room and more furniture making the space feel cramped.

Last…take away the clutter.  Personal pictures are great but to many in a small room is a distraction and makes the space feel claustrophobic. Same goes with lamps, vases and knick knacks.

To those with small spaces…Keep it simple…Simplicity goes a long way.

Color of the year is.....

EMERALD......

Ahhh...green is the universal healing color.  The ancient Egyptians used the color for both physical and spiritual healing.  Since green is in the middle of the color spectrum it has been known for centuries as an even balance in harmony both physically and spiritually.

Did you ever notice surgeons wear green? The reason is a surgeon becomes desensitized seeing the color red for a long period of time and makes it harder to see the human body.  If his surgical team wore white the surgeon would see green blurs as he shifts his line of sight to white backgrounds. By looking at the color green it quickly recovers the vision and helps a surgeon see the different variations of red for the duration of the operation.

Green is known for stimulating the heart and effects blood pressure. It's a direct link to nature which promotes inner peace, prosperity, comfort, calmness and avoidance to conflict.  I'd say it's a perfect color for 2013!

The emerald has an interesting history as well and is linked again, back to the Egyptians.  They were first found near the Red Sea in Egypt and exploited by the pharaohs in 'Cleopatra's Mines' back in 1500 B.C.  Emeralds were worn by the Egyptians for life, beauty and love.  They have been thought to have a healing property and promote good luck.  A fine emerald is more valuable then diamonds.

Here's to a healthy, comfortable, peaceful and of course lucky 2013!
